How to Choose the Right Paint Finish for Every Room

June 24, 2025

Matte? Satin? Gloss? Here's How to Decide Without Losing Your Mind

Let’s face it — paint finish names are confusing. Eggshell isn’t a color, matte isn’t flat, and "semi-gloss" sounds like something from a car brochure.

So let me break it down in plain English, based on real-world experience — and what actually looks good in homes like yours.

First, A Quick Word About Quality

If you're using high-end products like Sherwin-Williams Emerald, the finish you choose doesn’t affect washability nearly as much as it used to. That means you can go for the look you love and still have easy-clean walls.

Paint Sheen Quick Guide

Flat or Matte (My personal favorite — when it fits!)

  • Best for: Living rooms, bedrooms, ceilings
  • Why I like it: It hides wall imperfections better than shinier finishes and gives a soft, cozy look.
  • Modern myth-busting: With quality paint, even flat/matte is now washable.
  • When to skip it: In high-traffic or kid-heavy zones where scrubbing is frequent.

Eggshell / Matte Plus

  • Best for: Most walls in busy homes
  • Why it works: Slightly more durable than flat, but still elegant and low-sheen.
  • Good balance: Looks good, cleans easily, doesn’t highlight wall flaws too much.

Satin

  • Best for: Kitchens, bathrooms, hallways, and homes with pets or little kids
  • Why it’s common: Has a soft sheen, easy to clean, and stands up to humidity or fingerprints
  • Heads up: The shinier the surface, the more you'll see imperfections.

Semi-Gloss

  • Best for: Trim, doors, baseboards
  • Why pros use it: It's durable and stands up to bumps, vacuums, and wipes.
  • How it looks: Crisp and classic — pairs nicely with matte walls.

High-Gloss

  • Best for: Rare, bold accent looks or very modern spaces
  • Caution: It shows everything — every brush stroke, every dent. I sometimes see people choose high-gloss by mistake thinking it’s “fancier.” It’s not wrong — but it’s rarely right. Don’t be that person!

Final Thoughts

When in doubt, go with aesthetic first, especially when using great paint. Flat and matte finishes are absolutely beautiful in most living spaces — clean, soft, and timeless.

But if you have a house full of kids and pets? Satin or matte+ is usually the sweet spot for walls. And no matter what, let the trim pop with semi-gloss.
